What is earthquake? and facts

what is an earthquake?

An earthquake takes place when tow blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one  another. the surface where they slip is called a fault place.the location below the earth's surface where the earthquake starts Is Called The Hypo Center, And The Location Directly Above It On The Surface Of The Earth is Called The Epicenter. Sometimes An earthquake has fore shocks. These are smaller Earthquake That Happen in the same place before A Larger earthquake takes place.
The Largest main earthquake is called the main shock are always followed by Aftershocks That occur In The same Place And Can continue for weeks, month and years after the main shock.
What cause earthquake and Where Do Thy Happen?
the Earth has four major layers: the inner coreouter coremantle core, and crust. the crust and the top of our planet, But This Skin Is not all in one piece. It is made up of many pieces covering the surface of the earth. these pieces are called tectonic plates, and the edges of the plates are called the plate boundaries. these places keep moving around slowly, sliding past one another and bumping each other. these plate boundaries are made up of many faults, and most earthquake around the world occur on these faults.

Why does the Earth shake When there is an earthquake ?
while the edges of faults are stuck together, and the rest of the block is moving, the energy that would normally cause the block to slide past one another is being accumulated. When the force of the moving block finally overcomes the friction of the jagged edges of the fault and is breaks free , all that stored up energy is released. the seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it and when the waves reach the earth's surface, they shake the ground and anything on  it like our house and us. the energy radiates outward from the fault  in all direction in the from of seismic waves like ripple on a pond.

how are earthquake record?
Earthquake are recorded by instruments called seismograph. the recording they make is called a seismogram. the seismograph has a base that sets firmly in the ground, and a heavy a weight that hangs free .when an earthquake cause the ground to shake ,the base of the seismograph shakes too, but the hanging weight does not. inside the spring that is hanging absorbs all the movement. the difference in position between the shaking par of the seismograph and the motionless part is what is recorded.

facts about earthquake.

1. An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy.

2. earthquakes are mostly caused by the disturbance of Earth's tectonic plates landslides volcanic activity extraction of oil and nuclear testing.

3. the place where the earthquake starts is called focus and the place above this on the surface is called epicenter.

4. for shocks and aftershocks are the energy released before and after an earthquake.

5. an earthquake is considered major when it registers more than 7.0 magnitude scale.

6. about 90% of the world's earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean.

7. Mount Everest shrank 2.5 centimetres due to the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

8. About 90% of the world's earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.

9. eight thousand people die every year due to earthquake.

10. the largest earthquake ever recorded was a magnitude 9.5 in Chile.

11. the 2011 earthquake near Japan increased the Earth's rotation speed by 1.8 microseconds.

12. an earthquake on December 16th 1811 caused parts of the Mississippi River to flow backwards.

13. an earthquake on December 16th 1811 caused parts of the Mississippi River to flow backwards.

14. the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake lasted nearly ten minutes the longest on record.

15. before an earthquake ponds and canals may give off a strange smell due to the release of gases. underground.

16. scientists believe that animals can detect earthquake shock 15 minutes before human.

17. most earthquake related injuries result from collapsing walls flying glass and falling objects.

18. .unfortunately scientists cannot predict earthquakes but they can measure and record earthquake by using a device called seismomete.
